Menopause Doesn’t Have to Mean Losing Control

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is that many women arrive in my consulting room feeling as though their bodies have suddenly become unpredictable.

They tell me they no longer recognise themselves.

They’re waking several times each night drenched in sweat. Hot flushes appear without warning.

Sleep becomes fragmented. Their confidence begins to fade because they never quite know what their body will do next.

Perhaps the hardest part is that many women begin believing they simply have to put up with it.

I don’t believe that’s true.

While menopause is a completely natural stage of life, suffering through it doesn’t have to be.

Understanding what’s happening

As women move through menopause, changing hormone levels affect many systems within the body, including an area of the brain called the hypothalamus, which helps regulate body temperature.

For some women, this internal thermostat becomes much more sensitive.

The result can be sudden hot flushes, night sweats, disrupted sleep and an overactive nervous system.

When these symptoms occur repeatedly, the brain can begin anticipating them.

Many women become hyper-alert to the next hot flush or another poor night’s sleep.

Before long, the nervous system itself becomes part of the problem.

This is where the mind and body become closely connected.

The brain can learn a different response

One of the most exciting developments in neuroscience is our growing understanding of neuroplasticity — the brain’s remarkable ability to create new neural pathways throughout life.

This means the brain isn’t fixed.

It continues learning.

It continues adapting.

It continues responding to new experiences.

Hypnotherapy works with this natural ability.

Rather than fighting the body, we begin helping the nervous system experience calm, safety and regulation again.

As those experiences are repeated, the brain begins creating new patterns that support a greater sense of balance.

Why hypnosis can help

In a deeply relaxed hypnotic state, the body naturally shifts away from the stress response and towards the parasympathetic nervous system — sometimes referred to as the “rest and restore” state.

This calmer physiological state allows women to experience something many haven’t felt for quite some time.

Their body settles.

Their breathing slows.

Their nervous system begins remembering what calm feels like.

Alongside hypnosis, I often introduce simple mind-body techniques including breathing, guided imagery and body awareness exercises.

These are more than relaxation exercises.

They become practical tools that women can use themselves whenever symptoms begin to arise.

One of the principles I often explain is that the subconscious mind responds powerfully to felt experience.

When the mind imagines coolness, calm and comfort while the body is deeply relaxed, the brain begins accepting those experiences as meaningful.

Over time, those new experiences become increasingly familiar.

Evidence and experience

One of the reasons I enjoy working in this area is that the clinical research is encouraging.

Studies led by Dr Gary Elkins at Baylor University have demonstrated significant reductions in hot flushes following clinical hypnosis, and hypnotherapy is recognised by the North American Menopause Society as an evidence-based option for managing vasomotor symptoms.

Research is important.

But so are the women I meet every week.

I’ve watched women who had been waking multiple times every night begin sleeping peacefully again.

I’ve seen confidence return as they realise they can influence how their body responds.

Perhaps most importantly, I’ve watched fear disappear.

Instead of worrying about when the next hot flush will arrive, they begin trusting themselves again.

More than symptom relief

For me, menopause is never just about reducing hot flushes.

It’s about helping women reconnect with their bodies during a time of enormous change.

Many discover that this stage of life becomes an opportunity to slow down, listen more carefully to themselves and develop a new relationship with their health and wellbeing.

Rather than feeling controlled by their symptoms, they begin feeling capable again.

Calm again.

Comfortable again.

A different way to experience menopause

I don’t see menopause as something to battle.

I see it as a transition that deserves understanding, compassion and the right support.

The mind and body are continually communicating with one another.

When we learn how to calm the nervous system, build new neural pathways and restore confidence in our body’s natural ability to regulate itself, remarkable changes can occur.

Every woman experiences menopause differently.

That’s why every treatment should be individual.

My role isn’t simply to reduce symptoms.

It’s to help women understand what their body is asking for, discover practical ways to support it and move through this next chapter with greater ease, confidence and self-trust.

Because menopause is not the end of vitality.

For many women, it becomes the beginning of a new and deeply empowering chapter of life.
