One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “What exactly is hypnotherapy?”
It’s a wonderful question because many people have heard of hypnosis, yet few have experienced it for themselves. Some imagine stage hypnosis or believe they’ll lose control, while others wonder if it really works at all.
In my experience, hypnotherapy is much simple – and much more powerful – than most people imagine.
At its heart, it’s about helping the mind and body begin working together again.
The Mind and Body Are Always Communicating
Many of the people I see aren’t lacking motivation or determination.
They’ve already tried to change.
They’ve read the books.
Followed the diets.
Practised positive thinking.
Taken medication.
Worked incredibly hard.
Yet something still seems to pull them back to old habits, old fears or familiar patterns.
This isn’t because they’re weak.
It’s because much of our behaviour is driven by the subconscious mind.
Our nervous system remembers experiences.
Our emotions influence our behaviours.
Our bodies respond to what the mind believes to be true.
Understanding this changes everything.
Rather than fighting ourselves, we begin working with the incredible intelligence of the brain and body.
Why Change Can Feel So Difficult
One of the most important things I’ve learned during my years in clinical practice is that people rarely need more willpower.
They need a different conversation between their conscious mind, subconscious mind and body.
The subconscious mind is responsible for many of our automatic habits, emotional responses and learned behaviours.
When those patterns no longer serve us, they often continue simply because they’ve become familiar.
Whether it’s anxiety, chronic pain, poor sleep, emotional eating, fear of flying, public speaking or sporting performance, the principle is often remarkably similar.
The body keeps repeating what the nervous system has learned.
The good news is that what has been learned can often be relearned.
What Happens During Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a naturally relaxed state of focused attention.
Far from losing control, clients are usually surprised by how aware they remain throughout the session.
Many describe it as feeling deeply relaxed while remaining fully present.
This relaxed state allows us to reduce the constant chatter of the conscious mind and communicate more effectively with the subconscious.
This is where lasting change begins.
Together we explore the patterns that have been keeping the problem alive while creating new ways for the brain and nervous system to respond.
It’s not about forcing change.
It’s about creating the conditions where change becomes easier.
More Than Symptom Relief
One of the reasons | love this work is that people often come seeking help for one problem but leave noticing improvements in many areas of their lives.
Someone who comes to improve their sleep may discover they’re calmer during the day.
A person working on chronic pain often reports feeling lighter emotionally.
Someone overcoming anxiety frequently notices greater confidence at work, in relationships and in everyday life.
The mind and body are beautifully connected.
When one begins to change, the other often follows.
A Blend of Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science
What continues to excite me is how neuroscience is increasingly confirming what skilled hypnotherapists have observed for many years.
Research continues to demonstrate the brain’s remarkable ability to create new neural pathways throughout life.
We call this neuroplasticity.
This ability to learn, adapt and reorganise gives us tremendous hope.
Today, hypnotherapy is increasingly recognised as a valuable complementary approach for a growing number of conditions, including anxiety, chronic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, menopause symptoms, sleep difficulties and behavioural change. Healthcare practitioners are increasingly referring client because they recognise the important role the mind and nervous system play in overall wellbeing.
For me, this isn’t about replacing medicine.
It’s about working alongside it whenever appropriate to help people achieve the best possible outcomes.
Every Person Is Different
There is no single script for change.
Every client arrives with their own experiences, beliefs, goals and life story.
That’s why every session I provide is tailored to the individual sitting in front of me.
Whether someone wants to become free from chronic pain, overcome anxiety, improve sporting performance, sleep more peacefully or develop a healthier relationship with food, the starting point is always the same.
Understanding the person.
Because when we understand the person, meaningful change becomes possible.
The Real Goal of Hypnotherapy
People sometimes believe the goal of hypnotherapy is simply to remove a symptom.
I see it a little differently.
My goal is to help people reconnect with something they often feel they’ve lost.
Trust in themselves.
Trust in their body.
Trust in their ability to create lasting change.
When the conscious mind, subconscious mind and nervous system begin working together, people often discover something remarkable.
They already have far more capacity for change than they ever imagined.
Sometimes they simply need the right environment for that change to unfold.
And that’s one of the greatest privileges of my work—to help people rediscover what has been there all along.
